The camel bone
has emerged a favourite for carving purposes only recently, the ban on ivory trade being
the probable reason. Humbly standing second to the feel and elegance of ivory, camel bone
artifacts have however, their very own texture and feel that lends them a unique
character.
The
designs carved out are traditional, and some major centres of such carvings can be found
at Jaipur, in Rajasthan, Sambal in Madhya Pradesh and Gurgaon in Haryana.
Displays at the IHE are necklaces, earrings, broaches,
bangles, letter openers, stamps, decoration pieces, boxes and paperweights.
The prize attraction is the camel bone lamp, available in
various sizes. One of the biggest pieces stands 3 feet tall, intricately carved and
beautifully styled. Labourous effort of artisans, this rare piece costs around US $ 4000. |
