The instinct of self-adornment with gems and precious stones inlayed jewellery is motivated not only by the urge to decorate and beautify, but also by the need for personal talisman to provide protection against potentially destructive forces.

Various stones are attributed with different magical and medicinal properties. It is widely believed that adoring them helps smoothen one's life and solve problems, if used correctly. A huge majority in India sport rings embedded with varied stones serving varied purposes.

These beliefs are not unique to India or the Indian Sub-continent, but are followed seriously the world over. Even in Europe, it was widely believed that diamonds gave immunity to poison and revealed infidelity, amethyst protected against drunkenness, heliotrope stopped nose bleed and conferred invisibility, sapphire enabled the wearer to escape from prison etc.

Gems are believed to have celestial origin possessing magical powers and bringing luck to those born under the sign of the zodiac with which they were associated.
